Coinciding with the celebration of Valentine’s Day on 14 February, an original “ex-lovers’ market” has been set up in the Nişantaşı district, in the heart of Istanbul, where people can buy and sell objects belonging to former partners whose “love is over”.
Under the slogan “sell what your ex left, and buy a gift for your new love“, the stalls offer everything from clothes and books to watches, wallets, combs or mugs. “The number of visitors is very high; people have shown great interest. They come, they look at the objects on the market, and they buy. What’s more, you can socialise here. This is also an opportunity to even find a partner for those who don’t have one,” says one of the market organisers.
What is most striking about this ex-lovers’ market, however, are some of the notes next to the objects for sale, on which one can read phrases like “Red no longer suits you” on a sweater, “We ran out of time, our battery ran out” on a watch, or “Drawn from your troubles and sorrows” on a pair of trousers. Memories of a time and a love gone by, but which can be turned back into gifts for a new love on Valentine’s Day.
