Florists in Turkey are stepping up their preparations for 14 February, Valentine’s Day, a time when demand for flowers in general and roses in particular is soaring. Speaking to the Turkish news agency Anatolia, Emin Çimen, president of the Ankara Florists’ Chamber of Commerce, explained that some 40 truckloads of flowers have been shipped all over the country for this special occasion, noting that in addition to roses there is also a great demand for orchids, carnations and lilies for Lovers Day.
“Roses are always the favourite on Valentine’s Day. They mean love and passion. Red roses in particular are in great demand on 14 February, but roses in other colours are also in demand. For example, pink roses mean ‘my heart belongs to you’, and yellow roses mean ‘warm love’,” he explained. Despite the increased demand, Çimen stressed that the prices of flowers for Valentine’s Day are reasonable, ranging from 50 to 300 liras (1.5 to 9 euros): “In December, the price of a single rose ranged from 70 to 150 liras, depending on the quality. For this Valentine’s Day, florists will sell roses at the same price”.
