The Feast of Sacrifice, one of the most important on the Muslim religious calendar, called “Kurban Bayramı” in Turkish and “Eid al-Adha” in Arabic, officially started yesterday in Turkey. According to custom, families get together to sacrifice an animal (a cow, a sheep, a ram or a lamb), which must be well treated and slaughtered so that it suffers as little as possible, and distribute its meat among relatives, neighbours and the most needy. This festival remembers the sacrifice that, according to the Quran, the prophet Abraham made of a ram that God gave him, after he put him to test by asking him to sacrifice his firstborn.
