An earthquake measuring over 5 on the Richter scale shook this afternoon the province of Malatya in southeastern Turkey. Although fortunately there were no injuries or considerable damage from the quake, which struck at 16:05 local time (14:05 CET) and – according to information provided by the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) – reached an intensity of 5.2 and had its epicentre in the district of Battalgazi at a depth of about 14 km, many residents in the area rushed out into the streets for fear of collapsing structures.
It must be remembered that in August last year Malatya suffered a month-long succession of earthquakes, and the province was also one of the worst hit by the 7.8 and 7.6 earthquakes in February 2023 that causes massive destruction in southeastern Turkey, killing more than 50,000 people.
