Two earthquakes, one measuring 5.1 with an epicentre in the Gemlik Bay in the Marmara region – the most populated in the country – and the other just three minutes later in the same area, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, shook northwest Turkey this morning, causing panic among the population in cities such as Bursa and Istanbul. Although fortunately there were no casualties and only minor damage, today’s earthquake reminded many Turks of the “Big One” that scientists expect to hit Istanbul before the end of the middle of this century.
