Jordan cancelled a planned meeting in Amman on Wednesday between Jordanian King Abullah II, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Egyptian President Abdel Fettah el-Sissi and US President Joe Biden, following last night’s attack on a Gaza hospital that killed more than 500 people. In the wake of the tragedy, Palestinian President Abbas also cancelled a planned meeting with Biden, who is due to visit Israel today, in a major blow to the US president, who sees his ability to mediate a negotiated solution to the conflict with the intervention of the main players in the region undermined.
The brutal attack on Gaza’s Baptist Hospital, for which both Palestinian armed groups and the Israeli army blame each other, immediately sparked international condemnation from a multitude of countries, including Turkey, whose President Tayyip Erdoğan called for urgent intervention to stop Israel’s “unprecedented brutality” in Gaza, describing what happened as “the latest example of Israel’s attacks lacking of fundamental human values”. Organisations such as the Arab League, the WHO and the EU itself also condemned what they described as “diabolical” events, calling for respect for international law and for Israel to cancel the order to evacuate northern Gaza.
