Turkey unveiled its most powerful non-nuclear bomb ever developed, called ‘GAZAP’ (‘WRATH’) and with a warhead weighing 970 kilos (2,000 pounds), during the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF 2025) held from 22-27 July in Istanbul.
During this fair, which celebrated its 17th edition this year, Turkey presented numerous defence-related projects and products, and several agreements were signed, including the one between TAI and Airbus for the export of the Hürjet light combat fighter to Spain and the one signed with Indonesia for the acquisition of 48 units of the new Turkish fifth-generation fighter, the KAAN.
Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, the director of the Turkish Defence Ministry’s R&D centre, Nilüfer Kuzulu, referred to the new GAZAP (‘WRATH’) and HAYALET (‘GHOST’) bombs presented at the fair, explaining that the centre has been developing these and other products for 12 years. On GAZAP, she explained that it is a standard MK84 aviation munition that can be carried and delivered by F-16 fighter jets and has a high destructive capacity.
“What distinguishes GAZAP from others is its particle structure. It contains 10,000 particles, and thanks to this particle structure, the particles separate from each other during the explosion, dispersing within a radius of 1 kilometre and affecting all elements in this area. Its second characteristic is that, due to the differences in the inner filling material, it creates a very high pressure effect in the area of the explosion,” said the R&D manager.
Regarding the NEB-2/HAYALET, Kuzulu said it is a penetrating type of munition capable of penetrating walls and bunkers. Also weighing 970 kilos, if normally US-made missiles have a penetration capability of 2.4 metres in a standard nuclear power plant containment building made of C35 structural concrete (standard concrete), the HAYALET bomb is capable of penetrating up to 7 metres in C50 concrete, which is 3 times stronger than C35. As part of the tests carried out with this non-nuclear weapon, the NEB-2 was dropped on an island; the result: it created a crater 160 metres in diameter and penetrated 90 metres underground.
