Turkey‘s first nationally designed and manufactured BVRAAM (beyond visual range) medium-range radar-guided air-to-air missile, the Gökdoğan, was successfully test-fired in a test launch in which it reached the target set with millimetre accuracy, Turkish Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır announced on Wednesday.
‘Gökdoğan, the first air-to-air missile beyond the visual range of our country, reached the target aircraft with a direct hit in the test launch,’ Kacır reported in a message posted on his social media cited by the Anatolia news agency, in which he shared a video of the ballistic test highlighting the achievement as an important step towards Turkey’s goal of becoming fully independent in key defence technologies.
Also on social media, Defence Industries Agency (SSB) chairman Haluk Görgün congratulated all the institutions, industries and engineers involved in the project who ‘contributed to this success’. ‘Air-to-air missile capability is one of the most important elements of air dominance and deterrence. Gökdoğan represents a strategic step that strengthens our local and national power in this field,’ he said.
Gökdoğan is an active radar-guided medium-range air-to-air missile with a range ‘beyond visual range’ (BVRAAM) belonging to the GÖKTUĞ programme. Designed between 2013 and 2024, the new Gökdoğan missile was developed by the Defence Industries Research and Development Institute (TÜBİTAK-SAGE) and produced by Turkish arms manufacturer and defence contractor Roketsan.
