Turkey has announced that its Atmaca anti-ship missile system designed and manufactured domestically has successfully completed a test launch for the first time underwater, as announced on Wednesday by the President of the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), Haluk Görgün.
‘Atmaca, the steel sword of the Blue Homeland (concept), will now attack its targets under the sea. With today’s Atmaca launch test, we have confirmed the underwater firing capability of the guided missile, something that only a few countries in the world can do. The Atmaca, which was launched from a submarine vessel, successfully completed its flight,’ Görgün emphasised in statements posted on social networks and published by Turkish media.
The underwater test of the missile, which was fired from the TCG Preveze (S-353) Turkish submarine, was published in a video released by the Turkish Ministry of National Defence. Görgün, who thanked the Turkish navy, the Roketsan company and the subcontractors, engineers and technicians who contributed to the success of this test, emphasised that the defence industry in Turkey ‘is moving towards a future in which it will be fully independent on land, sea and air.’
The development programme for the Atmaca missile began in 2009 and was completed in 2018 by the Turkish defence company Roketsan. From 2021 in entered as part of the armament inventory of the Turkish army, replacing the US-made Harpoon missiles. Designed as a high-precision anti-ship missile, the Atmaca can be used on patrol vessels, frigates and corvettes, and was devised to operate in surface combat at sea, although with its latest updates and following this test, it has also acquired the capacity to be fired from submarines and to reach underwater targets.
