Turkish defence company Aselsan successfully tests laser anti-drone weapon

Turkish defence company Aselsan has successfully tested a mobile laser weapon system designed to protect military bases, airports, power plants, oil facilities and other vital installations from attacks with drones.

Called GÖKBERK, the innovative locally developed laser system is intended to enhance the capabilities of the integrated multi-layered air defence system ‘Steel Dome’ (Çelik Kubbe), developed by Turkey to protect its entire airspace, according to Turkish media reports. To do this, it uses a high-quality laser beam to physically eliminate the target, supported by electronic jamming systems designed to disable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Using algorithms for tracking assisted by Artificial Intelligence (AI), GÖKBERK is able to detect, track and neutralise aerial threats with great precision. The images released from the test show the capabilities of the new system – mounted on a 6×6 mobile platform and combined with the İHTAR detection system, also developed by Aselsan – to automatically track and destroy FPV drones in combat environments, standing out for its ability to operate continuously and with high energy efficiency thanks to an advanced cooling system.

Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, emphasised that this new laser weapon system against drones developed by Aselsan will play a crucial role in the defence of critical infrastructures and against asymmetrical threats: ‘No missiles, only lasers. In the defence sector, our technological and product capabilities are growing and improving,’ the minister said.
