Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, candidate of the coalition of 6 opposition parties that is contesting the presidential elections in Turkey on May 14, offered his rival Muharrem İnce a pact so that he would not be a candidate during the visit that Kılıçdaroğlu made to the headquarters of his party at the end of March, as Kılıçdaroğlu himself admitted last night during an interview with the Turkish TV broadcaster Habertürk. Turkish media claim that the deal offered by Kılıçdaroğlu, who claims he will win the elections in the first round by beating Erdoğan himself, included a post as education minister for İnce and several seats in Turkey’s parliament for his new Homeland Party.
İnce, who has come under heavy pressure to withdraw his candidacy from his former colleagues in the CHP, a party with which he won 30% of the vote as a candidate in the 2018 presidential election, appears to be rising in the polls, and rejected Kılıçdaroğlu’s proposal stating that withdrawing his candidacy would be disrespectful to the voters who support him; in fact, in his electoral campaign, İnce has criticized his former party for a lack of internal democracy and for moving away from the values of its founder, Atatürk, accusing the CHP of “forming a party coalition of fantasy incapable of governing a country.”
