The earthquakes that have devastated a region of almost 109,000 km2 in the southeast of Turkey (equivalent to Scotland and Wales together), bring a new danger: epidemics and diseases. Experts warn of the risk of spreading cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, and even scabies and lice, due to the lack of hygiene, the overcrowding of people, the complicated housing conditions, and the difficult access to drinking water. An increase in cases of diarrhea among survivors has already been detected, as well as numerous cases of infection by mites and lice. There are also fears of an increase in flu and COVID-19 infections. In addition, experts warn that the massive removal, demolition and reconstruction work in the region could trigger respiratory diseases due to the spread of dust, fungi, and even toxic materials such as asbestos in the air.
