On the 10th day of rescue operations following the devastating earthquakes in southeastern Turkey, a 42-year-old woman, Melike Imamoğlu, was rescued after spending 222 hours trapped in rubble in Kahramanmaraş, the epicenter of the 7.8 and 7.6. earthquakes. Already considered as the worst world disaster of this century, the death toll in Turkey alone has already risen to 35,418 people (to which must be added 105,505 injured), making it the deadliest catastrophe since the founding of Turkey 100 years ago, after surpassing the 1939 earthquake in Erzincan that killed 33,000 people. It is estimated that some 47,000 buildings have been destroyed or are so damaged that they will have to be demolished.
