Turkey’s nationalist İYİ Party will run alone in Turkey’s next local elections scheduled for March 2024, its chairwoman Meral Akşener has announced, ruling out repeating the electoral coalition that united the İYİ Parti with a six-party alliance that included Turkey’s main opposition party, the CHP, in the presidential and parliamentary elections held last May.
“We cannot waste votes. We will appear before our nation with our own cadres in the local elections,” Akşener said in a speech on Saturday. “We gave up our own interests for the greater good of our nation. Unfortunately, there are those who had no higher priority than their seats,” the İYİ Party leader said, in a clear reference to CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.
Akşener threatened in May to withdraw his party from the coalition over its rejection of Kılıçdaroğlu’s candidacy to face Erdoğan, and prominent İYİ Party members resigned after Kılıçdaroğlu negotiated with Kurdish nationalists – accused of links to the PKK terrorist group – for their support for Turkey’s presidential election. The CHP leader now faces heavy criticism and pressure within his own party after he was not able to defeat Erdoğan even, despite many polls being in his favour.
