Shock in Turkish opposition: Istanbul mayor seeks to overthrow Kılıçdaroğlu

Turkey’s main opposition party, the CHP, has been rocked by a shock after a video was leaked showing current Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu holding an online meeting with leading party figures to call an extraordinary CHP convention and oust Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu from the general secretary. Kılıçdaroğlu has insisted on staying at least until the 2024 local elections despite strong criticism received to his leadership after his defeat against Erdoğan in the recent presidential elections, despite leading a coalition of parties and having the polls in his favour.

In a televised interview yesterday, Kılıçdaroğlu made clear his discomfort over the video, describing the meeting organized by the Istanbul mayor as “ethically inconvenient”. “If someone is a candidate to lead the CHP, the procedures are very clear. He can act with those who support him but on condition of complying with ethical values,” said the opposition leader, who for the moment ruled out taking any disciplinary action. İmamoğlu, whom many believed was the best candidate to face Erdoğan, was one of the first to call for changes in the party after the electoral defeat in the presidential and parliamentary elections.
