A recent study based on the opinions of tourists and carried out by a well-known car rental website has ranked Turkey as the country with the third most educated drivers in the world, only behind Cyprus and New Zealand, to the surprise even of many Turks.
The study, carried out by the DiscoverCars.com website and reported by several media outlets in Turkey, was based on a survey of 4,980 tourists who rented cars in countries around the world and asked participants to rate the politeness of local drivers on a scale of 1 to 10; only countries with at least 50 user reviews were included in the ranking.
According to the results, the Greek Cypriot Republic ranked first with an average score of 8.83, followed by New Zealand with 8.77 points and, in third place in the ranking, Turkey with 8.73 points. One factor that could contribute to this good opinion of Greek Cypriots among tourists is the fact that rental cars on the island use red number plates, so local drivers are aware – and perhaps more patient – when they are dealing with a tourist on the road.
On the other hand, respondents highlighted New Zealand’s orderly driving culture and respectful driving behaviour; in New Zealand, where driving is on the left, the rule of always driving in the left lane is enforced except for overtaking on motorways, as the right lane is considered the fast lane.
Drivers in Turkey, polite but with ‘different’ rules
In the case of Turkey, tourists highlighted the politeness of Turkish drivers, while noting that some driving habits in the country are different from international norms; for example, it is common practice for drivers in Turkey to honk before overtaking to warn the other vehicle.
After Turkey, the Top 5 most polite drivers in the world are Australia and Portugal, in 4th and 5th place respectively. The Canary Islands appear in 7th position, with 8.31 points above the rest of Spain (8.29 points). It is also surprising to find Italy in 10th position (8.02 points), while France is 12th (7.84 points) and Florida (USA) appears in 14th place (7.14 points).
