Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city and Europe’s most populous with 16 million inhabitants, welcomed more than 18 million foreign tourists in 2024, surpassing the 17.4 million visitors it welcomed in 2023 and confirming itself as one of the major destinations for global tourism.
Turkish media reported, citing data from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, that the Bosphorus metropolis welcomed 18.6 million foreign visitors in 2024, representing 35.3% of the total number of tourists visiting Turkey last year, when the Eurasian country broke its all-time tourism record with 52.63 million non-Turkish tourists, a 6.95% more than in 2023.
By nationality, Russians topped the ranking of countries of origin of tourists who chose Istanbul as destination, with 1.98 million people coming from that country, followed by Germans with 1.42 million, and Iranians in third place with 1.15 million. In addition, the number of tourists from the United States reached 967,000, and another 795,000 travelled from the United Kingdom.
