The population of Istanbul is already close to 16 million inhabitants, according to a report recently published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), which indicates that in 2022 the Turkish metropolis incorporated just over 67,000 residents reaching 15,907,951 inhabitants, equivalent to to 18.65% of the population of the whole Turkey. It is followed by Ankara with 5,782,285 inhabitants, Izmir (4,462,056), Bursa (3,194,720) and Antalya (2,688,004). 93.4% of the Turkish population lives in cities (0.2% more than in 2021); in addition, according to another TÜİK report, at the end of 2022, 67.9% of Turks resided in densely populated areas, despite the fact that these represent only 1.6% of the country’s surface.
