The Turkish metropolis of Istanbul has been chosen as one of the best destinations in Europe for solo travellers, according to the Top 20 European Cities for Solo Travellers ranking compiled by Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air, based on traveller reviews on the Tripadvisor platform.
The ranking of 20 destinations is topped by the Greek island of Rhodes, located just off the coast of Turkey, while the city of Split in Croatia ranks second on the list. Istanbul is in third place, tied with the city of Faro on the coast of Portugal, just ahead of Florence (Italy). Spain is represented in 6th place with the city of Seville, tied with the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik.
Surprisingly, popular destinations such as London, Paris or Rome do not appear in the Wizz Air ranking, suggesting that people travelling alone seem to be looking for less touristy destinations, away from large crowds. “Solo travellers are looking for destinations that entertain them, and the cities on our list are designed to meet that expectation,” said a Wizz Air executive.
Istanbul tops the list of Europe’s best destinations for solo travellers for its diverse tourism offer, excellent restaurants, and its charm for to those looking to explore this city full of history and legends. Travellers give an average score of 67 out of 100 to the experience of travelling to Istanbul, and its restaurants in particular receive a score of 71 out of 100.
