Turkey’s National Assembly (parliament) passed late on Tuesday the bill to finally give the go-ahead for Sweden’s NATO membership, thanks to the votes of Erdoğan’s AKP party and its nationalist MHP allies, and the support of the main opposition CHP party. Other minority parties, including the IYI Party, voted against. A total of 346 Turkish MPs took part in the vote, of whom 287 voted in favour of the proposal and 55 against.
The Turkish parliament’s decision to give the go-ahead for Sweden’s NATO membership was particularly welcomed by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson: “Positive that the Grand General Assembly of Türkiye has voted in favour of Sweden’s NATO accession. Today we are one step closer to becoming a full member of NATO,” he wrote on the social networking platform X. The US, through Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan, also welcomed the decision in Ankara, which now leaves Hungary as the only NATO member country that has not yet approved Sweden’s membership.
