Turkey believes that Sweden has not taken enough steps to join NATO

Turkey’s foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, referred yesterday to the status of Sweden’s candidacy to join NATO after the donors’ conference organized by the EU to help Turkey and Syria after the devastating earthquakes. According to Çavuşoğlu, although Sweden has taken positive steps, these are still insufficient to address Ankara’s concerns, partly because the laws in that country protect the activities of terrorist organizations such as the PKK or its Syrian branch, the YPG, he assured. “What we expect from Sweden is to put an end to the financing, recruitment and propaganda activities of terrorist groups,” the Turkish minister told reporters.
