NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed his confidence on Tuesday that Turkey will finally approve Sweden’s entry into NATO, after Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan promised yesterday to end his veto during the meeting that Erdoğan himself, Stoltenberg, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson held in Vilnius. “It’s a good thing for Sweden, it’s good for Turkey, and it’s good for the whole of NATO and also for the Baltic region,” said the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance.
“The (NATO) summit is already historic, before it has even started,” Stoltenberg said after Erdoğan promised to end his veto during the meeting in the Lithuanian capital – prior to the Alliance summit – and bring the Sweden’s entry into NATO issue to the Turkish parliament – where Erdoğan’s party and its allies have a majority – for ratification.
For his part, the Swedish prime minister promised Stoltenberg and Erdoğan to improve the fight against the PKK terrorist group, against its Syrian affiliate the YPG, and against organizations such as FETÖ, the group that orchestrated the failed 2016 coup in Turkey, for which a bilateral security cooperation mechanism will be established. Erdoğan also achieved strong support from NATO allies for Turkey’s accession to the EU, as well as for removing any defense sanctions or vetoes on Ankara.
