The United States on Monday approved the $259 million sale to Türkiye of the software upgrade for the fleet of F-16s that make up the bulk of the Turkish Air Force: a move that comes just weeks after the Turkish parliament approved Finland’s entry into NATO. As reported by the US State Department, the update includes improvements to communications and security systems, such as the ground collision avoidance system. On the other hand, Turkey maintains the request made in 2021 to buy 40 new F-16s from the US, but several senators and congressmen oppose it, alleging that the Turkish government poses a military threat to Greece and that it should withdraw its veto on the entry of Sweden in the Atlantic Alliance.
