The Turkish parliament approved Finland‘s accession to NATO late on Thursday, 3 days after the Hungarian parliament – the other member country of the Alliance that had not yet given the go-ahead to the Nordic country – did the same. The 276 deputies present during the vote in the Turkish Grand National Assembly voted unanimously in favor of the entry into the Atlantic Alliance of Finland, whose president Sauli Niinisto – who recently visited Turkey – gave thanks shortly after for the support received. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was also pleased with the result of the vote in the Turkish parliament: “This will make the NATO family stronger and more secure,” he said. Still pending is the accession of Sweden, which the Turkish government accuses of not doing enough to fight terrorist groups operating in the country, including the PKK.
