Turkey has once again reiterated its well-known position of refusing to ratify Sweden’s entry into NATO, maintaining that it can approve Finland‘s entry if the candidacy is submitted separately, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said today during the visit to Ankara of its counterpart in Hungary, the other country that has not yet given the go-ahead to the accession of the two Nordic countries to the Atlantic Alliance. “It is not possible for us to say ‘Yes’ to Sweden’s NATO membership until the commitments (made by Sweden) are fulfilled,” Çavuşoğlu declared a few days before the 3rd trilateral meeting between Turkey, Finland and Sweden, scheduled for for March 9.
