The iconic Maiden Tower in Istanbul, one of the main symbols of the city and a favorite place for tourists to take selfies, reopens its doors tomorrow, May 11, after 2 years of restoration works that have removed several concrete and metal elements added throughout the 20th century, and that endangered its structure. In this way, the appearance that the Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi, in Turkish) now looks like recovers the original image it had during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II, at the beginning of the 19th century. Also called Leander’s Tower, it is actually a historic fort built on an islet by the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who in 1110 built a wooden tower protected by a stone wall to protect the entrance to the Bosphorus.
