An earthquake in the province of Adana – southern Turkey – this morning sparked panic among the local population, according to security camera footage, while locals fear that the succession of earthquakes that have shaken this part of the country in recent days are anticipating a major quake.
Turkish media reported that the tremor struck at around 7:09 a.m. local time (6:09 CET) with its epicentre in the Saimbeyli district of northern Adana province. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) put the magnitude at 4.5 on the Richter scale – although some media reported a magnitude of 4.6, citing data from the Kandilli Seismological Observatory in Istanbul – and said the tremor struck at a depth of only 6.96 km below the earth’s surface, intensifying its effects.
Many people rushed into the streets when they felt the quake, although it caused no major damage or injuries, according to Turkish authorities. But the Turkish press highlighted the fact that in recent days there have been several tremors in the region, raising fears among the local population of a major earthquake like those that struck in February 2023, which devastated southeastern Turkey leaving more than 53,000 people dead and thousands of buildings severely damaged.
Images recorded by security cameras in the town of Saimbeyli, in southern Turkey, captured the moment when this morning’s earthquake struck: many people can be seen taking to the streets to seek shelter from the earthquake as debris begins to fall onto the street, and cracks can even be seen appearing in the pavement of the road due to the seismic shaking.
