The recent earthquakes in Turkey have sparked deep concern and some panic among the population about the resistance of buildings in case of a possible earthquake. As the emigration of people seeking to leave cities like Istanbul to move to areas with lower earthquake risk skyrockets, many buildings are being hastily checked for possible structural problems, including public offices, hospitals and schools.
Expert reports say that 4,159 schools throughout the country are at high risk and 191 are built on tectonic faults, forcing dozens of schools to be evacuated and their students transferred to other centers, with morning and afternoon classes to accommodate them. So far, 93 schools have been evacuated in Istanbul, 6 in Ankara, 8 in Izmir, 28 in Manisa, 5 in Tekirdağ, 3 in Aksaray, another 3 in Hakkari, and one in Edirne. At the same time, more than 4,000 teachers have requested to be transferred from the region of the last earthquakes to other provinces.
