Coinciding with the restart today of classes in 71 of Turkey’s 81 provinces after a two-week stoppage due to earthquakes, the Governor of Istanbul has announced that 93 schools in Istanbul that are considered at risk in the event of an earthquake will be evacuated with the start of classes, and their students transferred to other centers prepared to resist earthquakes. In total, 51,995 students and 2,765 teachers will be transferred to other schools. According to the governor, a total of 769 schools built before the Great Marmara Earthquake of 1999 (before the new anti-seismic legislation came into force) have been reinforced, and another 367 demolished and rebuilt since 2006.
