Death toll in Turkey from the earthquake exceeds 40,000

The death toll in Turkey from the 7.8 earthquake in Kahramanmaraş, later followed by another 7.6 quake, today exceeded the barrier of 40,000 deaths. According to the AFAD emergency agency, there are already 40,642 dead and more than 100,000 injured by the earthquakes, and some 430,000 people have been transferred from the disaster area to other provinces of Turkey. In addition, according to the latest estimates from the examination of 684,000 buildings in the region, 84,726 buildings have been destroyed by the earthquake or are so severely damaged that they must be demolished.
