The 3,000-year-old remains of an ancient Greek port have been revealed after the sea level lowered near the ruins of the ancient city of Soli (Pompeiopolis), located in the Mezitli district of Mersin, southern Turkey. Soli was founded as a Greek colony around 700 BC in the Cilicia region. The city was conquered by the Persians and later by Alexander the Great; in 67 BC it passed to the control of Rome, which renamed it Pompeiopolis in honor of its conqueror, Pompey the Great. In 525 AD Soli was finally washed away by an earthquake and abandoned.
