Archaeologists have begun excavations at the ancient Roman port of Soli Pompeiopolis, built in the 2nd century AD and located in the Turkish province of Mersin, on the southern coast of Anatolia. Soli was a Greek city founded by settlers from Rhodes in 700 BC; conquered by Pompey the Great in 64 BC after defeating the Cilician pirates, it was rebuilt and baptized in his honor as Pompeiopolis, becoming one of the most important ports in Eastern Mediterranean.
