The storm of rain accompanied by winds of more than 90 km/h that has hit Istanbul in the last hours caused numerous complications for traffic and maritime transport, hitting many areas of the coast with waves several metres high that caused flooding and material damage, such as those produced in the famous Ortaköy mosque, or incidents such as the one shown in the following video, recorded in the area of Sarayburnu and Gürpınar, at the entrance to the Golden Horn.
The storm also caused a Turkish cargo ship carrying 600 tonnes of diesel fuel, named Kadriye Ana, to run aground off the coast of Zeytinburnu, on the European side of Istanbul. While there were no casualties, the 11 crew members of the ship had to be rescued amid adverse weather conditions, in a difficult operation involving teams from the police, fire brigades, coast guard and the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD).
The severe storm that hit Istanbul yesterday also forced the suspension of public water transport services across the Bosphorus Strait, forcing many Istanbulites to resort to alternative transport services such as the Marmaray (the underwater tunnel across the Bosphorus) or metrobus services, causing large crowds at the stops and stations of these services.
