Wind and rain accompanied by heavy storms that are sweeping across much of Turkey are also affecting the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul, where strong waves accompanied by winds of close to 100 km/h tore up several stone blocks from the paving next to the famous Ortaköy Mosque (Büyük Mecidiye Mosque). The bad weather in Istanbul has forced the temporary suspension of ships and ferry traffic in the Bosphorus Strait, which divides the city in two and separates Asia from Europe.
