At least two people were killed and 13 others injured after heavy storms accompanied by torrential rain over the weekend in Turkey caused extensive damage and flooding, the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said.
One of those killed died when a group of five hikers on a trek in the central Turkish province of Konya took shelter from the storm in a shed that collapsed on the group, injuring three of them. Also in the province of Sinop on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, a woman died after being trapped in a granary that collapsed during the storm. Coastal areas were also particularly affected, with floods due to rising seas caused by rain and wind.
The storms also severely affected Istanbul, where, according to the governor’s office, 114 incidents of trees and poles fallen and roofs torn off buildings were reported; several flights and ferry services had to be cancelled due to bad weather. In the city of Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, the storm raised the sea level by one metre, causing it to penetrate inland and flooding several city streets, also causing power outages.
