Fenerbahçe did not spare the bottom team, Istanbulspor, in yesterday’s penultimate match of the 19th round of the Super Lig at Istanbul’s Olympic Atatürk Stadium, with İsmail Kartal‘s side needing a win to secure top spot. The Yellow Canaries showed no mercy against Istanbulspor (who recently caused yet another crisis in Turkish football by abandoning a match), leaving the game all but settled thanks to a four-goal hat-trick from Turkish striker Cengiz Ünder, who put Fener ahead after just six minutes into the game with a spectacular strike from outside the box.
On 33 minutes Muammer Sarıkaya equalised for Istanbulspor with a header in the six-yard box – a goal that, paradoxically, went virtually uncelebrated in a stadium packed with Fenerbahçe fans. But it was only a mirage. Two minutes later, the Balıkesir striker appeared again, stealing a ball from the clueless home defence to make it 1-2. In the 44th minute, Cengiz scored again in a move almost identical to the first goal; and a minute later, Edin Džeko made it 1-4 in the final seconds of the first half. Just after the start of the second half, Cengiz reappeared to make it 1-5 with a pass from Szymański.
The scoreline could have been even bigger if Tadić had scored the penalty that the Istanbulspor goalkeeper committed in the 62nd minute against Szymański. Even so, Fenerbahçe‘s comfortable win over the bottom team means they remain top of the league for another matchday, levelled on points with Galatasaray, who also made their part by beating Konyaspor.
