In the midst of plans announced by the government and the city council to evacuate buildings or review their resistance in Istanbul, where a “Big One” is expected in the coming years, the fear of an earthquake after the last and devastating earthquakes in the southeast of Turkey has triggered emigration to leave Istanbul. According to sources in the real estate sector, the demand from Istanbul residents looking to buy a home in other neighboring provinces such as Kırklareli or Edirne (safer according to earthquake risk maps) has multiplied by 8 in recent weeks; customers mainly demand ground-floor houses, rather than tall buildings.
Websites such as ekonomim.com claim that in the past 10 days the number of people leaving Istanbul has reached its highest in two decades, since the Great Marmara earthquake in 1999. Other Istanbul residents are opting to move to more remote and safer districts on the outskirts, like Sarıyer or Beykoz, and the forecast is that this trend will continue rising.
