With just over two months to go before the presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey, the Turkish opposition has been mortally wounded after the İYİ Party, the second most important of the so-called National Alliance, has announced that it is leaving the 6-party coalition. Its leader, Meral Akşener, has justified her decision by the insistence of the main alliance party (CHP) to designate its leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu as a candidate to face Erdoğan.
According to Akşener, the other members of the coalition rejected her two proposals: the mayors of Istanbul or Ankara, Ekrem Imamoğlu or Mansur Yavaş, both from the CHP and with high popularity ratings unlike Kılıçdaroğlu, who has little acceptance outside of CHP voters, and has previously faced Erdoğan with poor results. “İYİ Parti was cornered, put between a rock and a hard place… At this point, we will no longer be a part of this game,” Akşener said in a harsh speech. The National Alliance candidate will be officially announced on Monday.
