Istanbul and Ankara mayors, Ekrem Imamoğlu and Mansur Yavaş, have expressed their support for their party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu after İYİ Parti President Meral Akşener asked both of them to step up to challenge Kılıçdaroğlu and run as candidates for the Presidency of the Republic. Akşener made the appeal after the İYİ Parti left the 6-party opposition coalition, precisely because of Akşener’s rejection of Kılıçdaroğlu as the candidate to face Erdoğan in the May elections. “I have no doubt that the coalition will grow further with Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu, who represents us,” declared the mayor of Istanbul. Before leaving, Akşener had unsuccessfully proposed to the coalition – which will possibly make Kılıçdaroğlu’s candidacy official on Monday – that one of the two mayors be the united opposition candidate.
