Heavy rains in Istanbul in the last few hours left major flooding and scenes of chaos in several areas on the outskirts of the city, especially in the districts of Şişli, Gaziosmanpaşa, Arnavutköy and Başakşehir, located on the European side of Istanbul, where rainfall of up to 218 litres per square metre was recorded.
In many of the affected areas, located on the outskirts of Istanbul, the water left behind by the torrential rains rose up to a metre high, covering and washing away cars and flooding shops and ground floors. Several people were filmed being swept down the street by the force of the water, although fortunately there were no casualties or seriously injured. Floods also affected the Pendik district, on the Asian side of Istanbul this morning, where several people trapped in a bus had to be rescued.
