The death toll from the explosion four days ago at a petrol station in the Karabakh region, an Armenian-majority enclave but legally part of Azerbaijan, has risen to 170, the pro-Armenian Karabakh government said, noting that forensic experts have been able to collect “170 remains” of bodies that will be taken to Armenia for identification. A further 349 people were injured, most of them with severe and critical burns from the fuel.
The exact cause of the explosion, which occurred as hundreds of people queued to fill up their cars, remains unknown at this stage, at a time when thousands of Karabakh Armenians are leaving the region for Armenia following an operation launched by Azerbaijan that culminated in an agreement to dissolve the self-styled Artsakh Republic and integrate it into Azerbaijan, prompting many Armenians to flee for fear of reprisals.
