Thousands of members of Iran’s Azerbaijani minority, which constitutes the majority of the population in the country’s northwestern provinces, took to the streets to protest against the shipment of weapons to Armenia demanding the closure of the border, and claiming that Nagorno – Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan. The protests, which took place in Iranian cities such as Ardabil, Tabriz or Urmia, were harshly repressed by the Iranian police. It is estimated that at least one third of Iran’s population is made up of Azerbaijani Turks, who are often discriminated.
