The first Van cats, a unique breed of cats native to Turkey’s eastern Anatolia region, were born a few days ago at a breeding and study centre in the eastern Turkish province of Van. The director of the institution, Professor Abdullah Kaya, told the media that two female cats housed at the centre have given birth to a total of five kittens.
“About 30 cats will give birth in the first batch, so from now on we will see more kittens. The births at the centre happen in three batches throughout the year. These are very exciting times for us. The cats that give birth stay with their kittens for two and a half months. Currently, two of our cats have given birth,” the professor explained.
Van cats are a peculiar breed of cats originating from Turkey that stand out for their mainly white fur and their two-coloured eyes; other singular characteristics of this feline breed are their particular way of walking – similar to that of the big cats – or their unusual fondness for swimming, being also a very appreciated breed due to their special affinity with humans. The so-called “Van’s Cat Village” is a care, research and breeding centre that receives thousands of tourists every year, who can see the cats here and even adopt some of them.
