In an unprecedented ruling that marks a before and after in the way animals are treated, a court in Istanbul recognised the feelings of cats and their relationship with their owners when deciding on their custody, in a separation case. The legal battle began in 2018, two years after the couple who shared the custody of Piraye and Cingöz, two adopted cats, separated: the man claimed that they were his property, but the woman refused, claiming that she was the one who really took care of them. An expert determined that the cats were well treated by the woman and that they would be psychologically affected if they were separated, as well as that Cingöz (who is partially blind) would not be able adapt to living in another home. Basing its decision on the new animal abuse law, the court finally decided to give the custody to the woman, taking into account the cats’ feelings and their well-being.
