2.46 million foreign tourists travelled to Istanbul between January and February 2024, according to data just released by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, representing an 8.1% increase on visits figures for the same period in 2023. Last month alone, the top tourist destination – and the country’s largest economic and financial centre – welcomed some 1.3 million tourists, 19.1% more than in February last year.
In total, Istanbul welcomed 56% of all foreign tourists coming to Turkey last month, with 2.3 million tourists visiting the Eurasian country in February. By nationality, Russians led visits to Istanbul in February with 139,000 visitors from Russia, followed by Germans (95,465), Iranians (75,000), British (56,400), French (48,000), Saudis (43,400) and Americans (41,470).
The vast majority of foreign tourists visiting the Turkish metropolis arrived via the new Istanbul Airport, which accounted for 70% of total air arrivals to the city. In 2023, 17.4 million foreign tourists visited Istanbul, and this year that number looks set to rise, confirming the post-pandemic recovery of Turkey’s tourism sector.
