Tourism: Istanbul’s Galata Tower closes its doors

Istanbul’s iconic Galata Tower, one of the great icons and monuments of the Bosphorus metropolis, has closed its doors to visitors to undergo restoration works that will include earthquake-resistant reinforcement of its structure and renovation of its façade, taking precautions not to damage the around 400 nests of migratory birds that nest in the tower’s walls.

These new restoration works come after the 8th floor of the tower was closed last November to repair the roof; just a few days ago, and as a continuation of the work started in November, the 63-metre-high copper spire weighing 270 kilos was installed in an impressive operation that lasted 5 hours and was recorded from the air by a drone. The closure of the monument, which began yesterday 23 February, will however be temporary: the Galata Tower in Istanbul is scheduled to reopen its doors to tourists next April.
