Hagia Sophia is one of the most famous historical monuments visited by tourists in Istanbul, but very few know that underground it hides an intricate network of tunnels, rooms and even tombs. Turkish professor Hasan Fırat Diker and his team have spent years exploring the underground Hagia Sophia, whose history is as rich – and even older – than that seen on the surface; and although the legend that the tunnels in Hagia Sophia reached to the Maiden’s Tower on the Bosphorus is not true, historians believe that this hidden history must be known and preserved to help in the conservation of Hagia Sophia.
