Restoration works on the Maiden’s Tower in Istanbul (Kız Kulesi, in Turkish), which began at the end of the last year and that were scheduled to end in April, will continue for a few months, so the monument will remain closed. The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism is carrying out some works with the aim of recovering the original structure of the tower, which dates back to Byzantine times and whose silhouette is famous among tourists for taking selfies. The works will eliminate several annexes and metal and concrete structures that were added in the 1940s and 1990s, especially to the top of the tower, under questionable criteria. Once the restoration is finished, the Maiden’s Tower will recover its original structure consisting of “a fortress with a tower in one corner”, and tourists will be able to visit it.
