145 Van cats were born this year at the conservation and breeding centre dedicated this famous Turkish cat breed in the province of Van, in eastern Turkey, as announced by the centre’s director, Professor Abdullah Kaya, who defined 2023 as a very successful year for this cat breed: “80 cats were adopted by families. We are a big family of Van cats that is growing day by day”, he declared.
Van cats are a well-known breed from the province of the same name in the far east of Turkey, characterised by their predominantly white hair colour and two-coloured eyes (one blue eye, and one honey-coloured eye); they are the only cat breed in the world that likes to swim, and are known to have a greater affinity with humans than other cats. Contrary to popular belief, they are not deaf but have a very acute hearing, especially for music. The so-called “Van’s Cat Village” is a centre for the care, research and breeding of this breed, which welcomes tourists from Turkey and all over the world every year who come to see the cats of this unique breed and, in many cases, end up adopting one of these animals.
