At least 6 Turkish soldiers were killed in action during an attack by the PKK terrorist group in northern Iraq near the Turkish border, where the Turkish army has deployed a large contingent of forces to prevent incursions by the armed group into Turkey’s territory.
In a statement released late on Friday, the Turkish Defence Ministry confirmed the attack, adding that in retaliation the Turkish army responded with several air strikes on the attackers’ positions and during their retreat, killing at least 7 terrorists, as military operations continue in the region, where the Turkish Armed Forces deployed a large number of reinforcements.
Initially the Turkish Ministry of Defence announced the death of three soldiers in the attack, in which four others were wounded; however, in the early hours of the morning of Saturday Ankara confirmed in another statement the death of three of the four soldiers who were wounded in the initial attack: “Three of our four heroic comrades who were wounded… could not be saved despite all efforts, and were martyred (killed in action)”.
According to information published by the NTV channel, a large group of PKK terrorist group members attacked a group of soldiers stationed on a hill on the western edge of the Hakurk sector in northern Iraq, where the PKK has its main operational bases. In the attack, the terrorists used long-range weapons, rocket launchers and grenades. Military sources said that due to heavy snowfall in recent weeks in the region, and because of a snowstorm that the terrorists took advantage of to launch the attack, visibility had been reduced to only a few metres.
